MP3 Patent License Fees MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III

Patrick Vlaskovits

We received a question about MP3 patent license fees (MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III):

Hello Superpowered,

I am making a commercial game for Android and iOS. After reading your license agreement I was surprised to see that you don't charge any fees. This is great news for indie developers like myself and I am excited to get started with Superpowered Audio Engine.

My only concern is about mp3 patent license fees (or any other patents). Can I use Superpowered Audio in my commercial game without being required to pay any mp3 patent fees? I am assuming this is the case, just need to make sure.

The Superpowered Answer:

The good news and quick answer is: You don't need to worry about mp3 patent license fees.

Long answer: The MP3 patents have expired worldwide in 2012. Excepting the USA, where some related patents hold until September 2015. As MP3 patent fees have already been arranged on both iOS and Android, developers don't need to worry about this.
